“Twelve years ago, Jeff Tweedy sang, ‘I dreamed about killing you again last night, and it felt alright to me.’ Now it’s, ‘You won’t set the kids on fire / Oh, but I might.’ Whoever has been dismissing Wilco as ‘dad rock’ must have some pretty complicated relationships with their fathers.”—SPIN (via thedailywilco)
I’ve mentioned these guys before, but I guess you can never really promote your friends too much!
Arabia Terra formed less than a year ago when friends and former bandmates Cullen MacDonald and Jimmy Kelly got together to record some songs. Not long after, their friend Patrick Lewis joined them in their quest to make good music.
Each song, sung by either Cullen or Jimmy, was written and recorded in 24 hours - which, in my opinion, makes Arabia Terra all-the-more special. After writing and recording songs 1-6, the guys started thinking of how much better a song could become if they spent just an extra day writing and recording. Exploring this thought is “I’ll Make It Move For You,” their most recent song.
Just over the past few months, Arabia Terra has played some shows in Richmond at Sprout, Republic, and just last night - The Camel.
The show at The Camel was my first time hearing the guys perform as a full band, and as expected, they put on a fantastic show. It’s sort of funny to see your friends joking around and playing music one day and then to see them on stage performing in front of a crowd the next - and doing an awesome job at it, too.
The best thing about seeing them play is that you can tell that music is their true passion - you can’t really bullshit that. It was also cool to see them play with a fill-in drummer, who had to learn all six songs in a matter of just a few days. Pretty impressive, if you ask me.
Anyways, what I’m basically getting at, is even if they weren’t good friends of mine, I’d still listen to their music. Because in all honesty, they’re just really good at what they do, and you can tell by just hearing them play that they show a lot of promise.
So, check Arabia Terra out and try and hit up their next show if you’re in the Richmond area! Their sound is similar to that of Thrice, Brand New and Republic of Wolves. Listen to their songs here and go like them on Facebook! I know they’d really appreciate it.
***Also, if you’re a really awesome drummer living in Richmond and would like to play in a band, Arabia Terra is looking - message me in my ask or contact them on Facebook.
The Reps are currently the Album of the Week over at an amazing drum blog, entitled Kick/Snare/Hat. In addition to this honor, you can check out an interview the blog did with our drummer, Bradley, here.
